Roberto “Tussa” Alencar

Professor Roberto “Tussa” Alencar is the head instructor of Gracie Barra New Mexico. With over 20 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, professor “TUSSA” has been teaching since he was a purple belt. Having a lot of enthusiasm, professionalism, and determination he is growing a huge army of Jiu –Jitsu practitioners across New Mexico. Besides his career as a professor, Roberto Alencar has earned many titles as a competitor. He has traveled the world competing, teaching and coaching. He also serves as a JIU JITSU coach for many professional fighters in the UFC and other MMA organizations. He also served as the head JIU JITSU coach for Team Australia on the UFC Ultimate Fighter reality show.

 David Binder
Black Belt

A native of North East Albuquerque, David has made his passion a career. David started JIU JITSU in 2007. He began training under Mario ‘Busy’ Correa in Colorado then moved back to Albuquerque to study under Professor Tussa and Professor Rafael Barata. David is a strong competitor with a passion for teaching. David has been working and teaching for Gracie Barra New Mexico since 2010.

His knowledge of technique is at a world class level and his teaching is of the same caliber.

Don Ortega
Black Belt 2nd Degree

After graduating from Adams State College Don Ortega Started training Jiu Jitsu in 2003. Studying under Alberto Crane and Draculino, Don found a new passion. In the summer of 2004 Ortega made his MMA debut by defeating UFC veteran Brad Gumm. The following year Ortega returned to Adams State College to finish his final year of wrestling eligibility. With a rekindled fire for competition Ortega claimed 7th place at Division II NCAA National Championships earning All-American. Ortega then returned to Jiu-Jitsu winning titles in the Gi and No Gi divisions. Most notably, he won the 2007 FILA World Championships in Antalya, Turkey, the ADCC Trials in 2009, and the 2008 IBJJF World Championships. Ortega became the first American to win the brown belt middle heavy division in the IBJJF’s history of the tournament. Don has competed twice in the ADCC World Championships considered by many as the olympics of submission grappling Ortega trains daily and teaches at Gracie Barra NM.

Professor Rafael de Freitas, also known by his nickname “Barata”, is best-known for his creation of a shoulder lock submission named by his teammates as the: Baratoplata. Professor Rafael “Barata” has over 13 years of training. Technique is a major focus in his teaching and training philosophy. His positive personality and strict dedication make him a fierce competitor. He is a Black Belt Pan American Champion, A No Gi World Champion, and took Third Place at the World Championships as a Black Belt. He is also undefeated in his professional career in MMA and considered one of the best in the world in the 125 pound division. His charisma and witty personality help him to win over the hearts of his students and fans alike
