When you step onto the mats for a no-gi session at Gracie Barra Albuquerque, the first thing you notice is the shift in pace. Without the heavy cotton of the kimono to grab onto, the game transforms into something much faster and, honestly, a bit more visceral.

You can’t just anchor yourself to a lapel and stall. You have to move, and the drills we run there are designed specifically to build that kind of fluid, athletic muscle memory.

In no-gi, the fight almost always starts with wrestling. Because there are no collars to snag, we spend a lot of time on hand fighting and tie-ups. You’ll find yourself drilling the snap-down constantly. It is a simple but brutal movement where you use a collar tie on the neck and a tricep grip to jerk your opponent’s head toward the floor. It forces them to react, which opens up the legs for a double-leg or a high crotch takedown.

We also focus heavily on the underhook. It is probably the most important “handle” in the building. Drills involve digging for that underhook from a standing position to clear a path to the back or to set up a trip. It feels less like a formal dance and more like a tactical scramble for leverage.

Passing a guard in no-gi is a completely different animal than doing it in a Gi. At Gracie Barra Albuquerque, the instructors push “loose passing” styles. Since you can’t just grip the pants to pin their legs, you have to use your weight and speed.

One of the staple drills is the toreando pass. You learn to place your hands on the insides of their knees or ankles, stepping rapidly from side to side like a bullfighter. It’s all about creating angles. Another big one is the knee slice, where you drive your lead knee across their thigh to cut through their defense. The goal of these drills is to never let your feet stay in one place for more than a second. If you stop moving in no-gi, your opponent is going to wrap up your neck or go for a limb.

Because sweat makes everyone slippery, holding a position is twice as hard. This means the defensive drills are intense. We spend a lot of time on “shrimping” and hip escapes, but with a specific focus on getting back to a seated guard.

There is also a significant emphasis on “re-pummeling.” If someone gets an underhook on you while you’re on the bottom, the drill is to immediately fight your arm back inside. This constant battle for the inside position is the heartbeat of no-gi. If you lose the inside space, you lose the fight.

When it comes to finishing the fight, the drills shift toward high-percentage chokes and joint locks that don’t require cloth. The rear naked choke is the gold standard here. We run cycles where one person starts on the back and the other tries to hide their chin and strip the hands.

You’ll also see a lot of work on front headlocks and guillotines. In Albuquerque’s heat, people get tired, their heads drop, and that’s when you learn to snatch the neck. We practice transitioning from a failed guillotine straight into an Anaconda or a D’Arce choke. It’s about chaining these attacks together so that as soon as they defend one, they’re already falling into the next trap.

The beauty of the training at Gracie Barra Albuquerque is that it isn’t just about memorizing a move. It’s about learning how to keep your body in a position where you are always the one dictating the tempo. You leave the gym tired, probably a bit sweaty, but with a much sharper sense of how to use your own weight as a weapon.
